camera angles

low angle- the use of a low angle allows the camera to capture the power projected from the actor. it enables the audience to gain a sense of awareness of the type of character they are watching, giving an insight into what could be expected from the character throughout the story line. this type of shot is usually seen when presenting heroic or villain based characters.

eye level- the use of an eye level shot is used to capture emotion within the characters eyes , this can identify a specific emotion, allowing the audience to experience similar emotions or sympathy's with the character.

High angle- by using a high angle shot it captures the character at its most vulnerable state, this also can be a reflection of the characters emotions, however it can also represent a sense of insanity as the angle can be a reflection of  an outside thought or even a representation of an abnormal thought of some sort.

Worms eye view- this angle captures empowerment at its highest point it emphasises the importance of power and captures the building of anticipation. this shot can be used in horror films to show satisfaction from an act implemented by the villain or to capture a success of the heroic character.

Canted angle- the use of a canted angle is a clear representation of a distorted plot twist as well as the building of a bad situation. the use of a canted angle can also represent the unbalance of the characters current state of mind this could be a result of alcohol or drugs.

Birds eye view- this shot allows the audience to gain a general idea as to what the location of the scene offers allowing the to analyse elements that could be seen as dangerous or safe (within horror).

examples of these shot within films:

here we are shown a female character who appears  to be (from analysis of her costume) a villain of some sort, the use of a low angle highlights her distorted nature and suggests she is planning something twisted or inhumane.

here we are shown an eye level shot with the character Mariam from psycho, she appears to be lost in a daze and with the use of an eye level shot we can Identify her un-present nature, suggesting she could be day dreaming or having a flashback.
the use of the high angle highlights not only the age category of the character but also shows the level of vulnerability she has towards the audience enabling her to gain some sympathy for her character position.
a worms eye view is an extreme version of a low angle highlighting the inferiority of the character  amongst the character within the film but also the audience, it can also identify them as being forces not to be reckoned with.
this scene demonstrates a successful canted angle, it show the distortion of the characters settings demonstrating a sense of mental strength as they are able to defy the strength of gravity and have an intense fight scene.
this birds eye view captures , an immense amount of work ethic the use of this allows the audience to be introduced into the type od scene they will be watching.

introduction into the Unkown

This year our brief within media studies requires us to focus on the film genre of horror, we will be creating a horror trailer as well as a horror poster for the film. This specific topic will be a major challenge in regards to my emotional connection with the project as I am extremely terrified with this specific genre. From the age of approximately 11, I became fascinated with watching a series of different types of horrors, such as films like “the ring” and “chucky”, watching them gave me a sense of empowerment as I believed being able to watch horror films at such a young age (and to not get scared) mad me in a sense ‘tough’. However at around 15 years old I watched a specific Korean horror film named “shutter” and as of that day i became scared stiff of anything to do with Horror. This specific film was based on paranormal activities  however they weren't initially visible until the end of the film; enhancing my fear of anything ghostly or paranormal and unknown.

When thinking of the genre of horror, despite my dislike of the genre, I feel as if it plays well on what I consider to be my unique taste, by this I mean I am intrigued by the concept of people seeing the world in another perspective through visuals and editing techniques used to create an in-depth memorable experience.

I plan to play on my fear of horror, I am going to exploit my level of fear and create a piece which could possibly reflect my fear of horror from a victims perspective or incorporate what I can identify to be key elements of my fear and add those to my piece .

So lets get ready for all things UNKNOWN…
